Stepping Stones – David Ung
12/26/12
“I guess this is probably my last trick for 365yoyotricks this year. It was a good run and a great time. Thanks for following along, everyone! And of course, thanks Steve for having me! I like this trick a lot, but I think it’s one of those things that look cooler in a first person view rather than a third person view. It’s inspired by simple braintwister combos, but the arm-uncrossing direction changes are pretty nifty.” – David

The End
In 2010, I had the idea that I wanted to push myself to be a more active yoyo player. Back when I first started playing, and all through my days working for Duncan Toys and then briefly as a tour demonstrator for YoYoFactory, I threw constantly. It was not at all uncommon for me to put in at least 5 – 6 hours a day, and if I was on tour or handling a trade show then it easily became 8 – 10 hours a day. But having kids and starting a business take a lot out of you, and in 2010 I was coming off several years of barely touching a yoyo at all. I needed something to kickstart my creativity, and nothing does that like a public declaration so I announced that I was going to start 365yoyotricks.com, a website where I created, filmed, and uploaded one yoyo trick every single day for a year.
It turned out to be a lot harder than I thought, but in 2011 I did it. One original trick, every day. I dipped into a well of older tricks for days when whatever I was working on wasn’t ready yet, but I published video of 364 original yoyo tricks in 2011. (Halloween was a treat instead of a trick, with a coupon code for YoYoExpert.) In 2012 I decided to bring in some people who I personally wanted to see more play from, and put together a roster of players that are some of my personal favorites: David Ung, Nate Sutter, Ed Haponik, Drew Tetz, and Guy Wright. They contributed about a trick a week each, and I filled in the gaps. For 2013 I did the same thing with a new roster of players: Jacob Jensen, Spencer Berry, Darnell Hairston, Jake Bullock, and Rafael Matsunaga. As always, there were plenty of guest spots, but the formula remained; one new, original yoyo trick every day.
I even started a spin-off site, 365cooltricks.com, that is run by my friend Mark Hayward, featuring all kinds of tricks…juggling, kendama, magic, sleight of hand, bar tricks, and other object manipulation. It’s awesome, by the way, and Mark Hayward now has a much stronger understand of what I’ve done for the past 3 years in keeping 365yoyotricks.com going. Ha. Hi, Mark!
Today is the last trick of 365yoyotricks.com, “Denouement” by Hank Freeman.

My time is filled with fatherhood and husbandhood and running YoYoNews.com and organizing contests and generally doing a lot of behind-the-scenes work to better the yoyo industry and community. So in the interest of making sure that I put all my energy in the best places possible, I’m closing the doors on 365yoyotricks.com. The site will remain up indefinitely, and thanks to the tireless work of Greg Pettit it’s a LOT more searchable than it was before so it’s now a much more functional archive of amazing tricks from a lot of fantastic yoyo players. (And me. Ha.)
A huge thanks to André Boulay and YoYoExpert.com for his help in keeping 365 going, helping me move the site from Tumblr to WordPress, and sponsoring the project with kickbacks for the players. Much love to everyone who ever contributed a trick, to everyone who ever watched a trick, and to everyone who slapped one of our stickers somewhere inappropriate. A huge thank you to Tressley Cahill for designing the logos for both 365yoyotricks.com and 365cooltricks.com.
It’s been a great three year run! The theoretical successor to 365 is the #trickcircle series that Drew Tetz has been curating from Instagram clips…so follow that hashtag on Instagram, and keep an eye on YoYoNews.com for weekly roundups and discussion.
Happy New Year, and thanks so much for supporting this project! It really did wonders for me as a player, and I hope you got as much inspiration from it as I did.

David Ung
Sponsored by YoYoFactory
David Ung is a student currently studying Chemistry at UC San Diego. He enjoys science, filmmaking, and bicycles. Although he is a member of the YoYoFactory Contest Team, David is not known for freestyles; instead, he is known for clip videos such as Your Future’s With Us and Broke. Ed Haponik
Sponsored by SPYY
An adept of fixed-axle yo-yoing, Ed Haponik is probably best known for hitting old tricks on really old yo-yos. In 2012, he played only a single wood-axle yo-yo crafted by SPYY. Ed is a founding member of the Light Sleeper Society, a black belt in aikido, and a card-carrying member of the League of Extraordinary Dads. Follow him online at his blog and on Vimeo.

Drew Tetz
Sponsored by Duncan Toys
Drew Tetz is a 24-year-old graphic designer with a bunch of tricks and a debilitating pizza addiction. He used to do a lot of 3A, but it’s hard to fit two yo-yos in one pocket, so now he mostly sticks to 1A and 5A. Drew is a proud member of Team Chubby Lovin’, Duncan Crew Worldwide, and the Light Sleeper Society.

Guy Wright
Sponsored by SPYY
Hilarious and brilliant, Guy Wright has quickly become a fixture on “favorite player” lists everywhere. Showcasing technical brilliance and casual control, Guy’s videos “The Letter Blue”, “SPYY Guy Comics″ and “Picnic”, have solidified him as one of the most creative and innovative forces in our sport today. His signature yoyo by SPYY is the Punchline.
Follow your favorites on 365!
Just so you know, all the players on 365 have their own albums on Vimeo. This makes it super easy for you to track down specific tricks or just browse through tricks from your favorite player. Here are direct links to everyone’s albums…check ‘em out!
365 down….365 more to go!
So, here we go again!
For those of you who may have missed it, 2012 will bring 365 more yo-yo tricks but from a new roster of some of my favorite players!
I’ll be contributing two tricks a week, but you’ll also be getting one trick a week from Ed Haponik, Drew Tetz, Sebastian Brock, Nate Sutter, and David Ung!
First up is a new trick from Ed, uploading soon!
Also, PLEASE NOTE that I’ll no longer be uploading to YouTube! All tricks will be hosted on Vimeo from now on, so if you’re used to just subscribing on YouTube, please be sure to follow us on Twitter, Facebook, Vimeo, or Tumblr for your daily update!
I started this project in January 2011 as a personal challenge: could I keep up with filming and posting an original trick every day for a year?
Three hundred and forty nine days later the project has not missed a single day and I was awarded the Trick Innovator of the Year award by the National Yo-Yo Museum and Contest for my work on the site. How could I top that? Answer: More players!
For the 2012 season of 365yoyotricks.com, I will be joined by five other players, each contributing one trick per week.
Representing YoYo Factory will be myself and David Ung. David’s most recent video, “Broke”, has over 4,000 views on YouTube and is easily one of the best videos of 2011. David’s tricks have an almost mathematical precision, yet his style is incredibly smooth and flowing.
Representing Duncan Toys will be Drew Tetz, accomplished 3A and counterweight player. Drew’s creative and remarkably difficult counterweight wraps have blown minds this past year, and made him a strong contender for Trick Innovator of the Year. With his continued pushing of the creative side of counterweight play, 2012 may well be his year.
Representing SPYY will be Ed Haponik and Nate Sutter. Ed’s tricks have become the gold standard for modern fixed axle play…deceptively hard to perform but still simple enough for anyone to understand. Ed has given himself a second challenge this year, and will only be throwing a custom wooden yo-yo designed for him by SPYY. Nate has long been one of the most unique and creative players to come out of the American Northeast. His seasicks and repeaters are nothing short of incredible, and with his new location in New Orleans, Nate has finally found a city that can match his natural exuberance.
Our final player on the roster is 2010 National Yo-Yo Champion Sebastian Brock…and we’re incredibly proud to be the absolute first to announce that Sebastian will be representing SPYY! It’s no secret that Sebby is one of the most creative and effortlessly stylish yo-yo players in the world…his tricks stand in a world of their own and his 2nd Place freestyle in the 2011 World YoYo Contest was nothing short of astounding. We’re honored to have Sebby on board, and grateful that he and every else have made the time to be part of this project.
